Specifications apply to this model only.

What it Is: A premium compact five-passenger diesel luxury sedan.
What's Hot: European panache with four-door flexibility, diesel fuel economy.
What's Not: Small size hinders usefulness, price.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, premium audio, active cruise control.
How It Got Its Score:The 2011 BMW 335d offers very good fuel economy compared to its gasoline-powered brethren, but it's also one of the most expensive regular 3 Series models you can get, which mitigates that advantage.

BMW added a new wrinkle to its 3 Series lineup last year with the introduction of the 335d. The "d" stands for "diesel," and while diesel engines are common in Europe, they're still working to get a foothold in the U.S. market. The 2011 BMW 335d is something of a microcosm of the benefits and costs of diesels. On one hand, fuel economy is excellent, with the 35d offering far and away the best fuel economy of any 3 Series model. On the other hand, it's also the second-most expensive 3 Series model, not counting the high-performance M models. Still, the excellent fuel economy brings up its Family Friendliness score, and combined with the other merits of the 3 Series, its worth considering. It's just as beautiful as the rest of the lineup, and it boasts the same excellent interior. BMW re-engineered its iDrive navigation and audio interface, making it more user friendly. However, it also suffers from the same small trunk and compact dimensions of other BMW 3 Series sedans, something to keep in mind if you have kids.
