How It Got Its Score: The Lucerne Super costs nearly $10,000 more than the base Lucerne, but it still manages a decent Family Friendliness score thanks to standard stability control and a blind-spot monitoring system.

The Buick Lucerne Super is a V-8 powered version of Buick's big sedan. It comes with a $10,000 price premium over the base Lucerne, but with a very short options list because so much is standard equipment. We particularly like the blind-spot monitoring system, which uses sensors to warn the driver if there is a vehicle hidden on either side of the Lucerne, an important safety feature. Fuel economy isn't particularly good, however, and crash test scores suffer as well, and the Lucerne's age shows up in little ways, such as the lack of a USB input for an iPod. Still, if you like the feel of a traditional big American sedan, the Lucerne is one of only a handful of choices.
