Buick
2011 Buick Regal CXL RL1
What it Is: A four-door, five-passenger premium midsize sedan.
Who it's For: Families who need no more than two LATCH points, a good-size trunk, and a little luxury.
What's Hot: Lots of premium features standard equipment.
What's Not: Tight rear seat, confusing model mix.
Family Friendly Options: Bluetooth, USB input (standard); navigation (optional)
How It Got Its Score: Like many 2011 models, NHTSA crash test scores are not yet available. However, excellent IIHS scores (it's a Top Safety Pick), a big trunk and a relatively low price offset the Regal's relatively small size.
The Buick Regal has been absent from the U.S. market for seven years, but it returns this year as a small midsize premium sedan. The 2011 Buick Regal brings a lot to the table: Standard leather seating, standard Bluetooth and standard USB input. It also boasts excellent crash tests scores from the IIHS, boasting Good in all directions, earning it a Top Safety Pick. Compared to other midsize cars the trunk is pretty large, 14.3. cu.-ft., but the rear seat is a little tight, especially for tall passengers. Perhaps the best thing about the Regal is the price: The base CXL costs just under $27,000, including destination, and still comes with all the cool stuff. Even a fully loaded Regal only costs about $32,000. All Regals come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that provides decent if not stellar fuel economy. One downside is Buick's confounding model mix. There are six different Regal options packages, all of them only slightly different, and it seems as though it could be simplified significantly. Regardless, shoppers looking for a relatively fuel-efficient sedan with a handful of luxury options could easily do worse than the 2011 Buick Regal.
