2010 Chevrolet HHR SS

Family Friendliness: 7.3

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications apply to this model only.

What it Is: A small, five-passenger, performance-oriented four-door wagon.
Who it's For: Families needing no more than two LATCH points, plenty of cargo room, and want a high-performance car.
What's Hot: Turbocharged engine really makes it scoot.
What's Not: Fuel economy takes a hit, pricey.
Family Friendly Options: Dual-screen rear seat DVD entertainment system, USB, Bluetooth.
How It Got Its Score: Under the hood of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR SS is a turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out lots of power, but drinks more fuel too. The price is also higher than the standard HHR.

It wouldn't seem as though the blocky little 2010 Chevy HHR would be a good sport wagon, but with a 250-hp turbocharged four cylinder (260 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque with the five-speed manual transmission), it's surprisingly powerful. The whole car has been rethought with performance in mind, but none of the modifications really detracts from this little wagon's inherent usefulness. It still offers up 25.2 cu.-ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats, and you can order it with a DVD entertainment system with screens on the front seatbacks. Bluetooth is also available, as is a USB-enabled audio system. There are only two real downsides. The first is fuel economy, which isn't as good as the normal HHR, but still better than you might think. The other is price, which starts at $28,000 with destination and goes up quickly from there. The retro styling is a judgment call, but some buyers may be turned off.
