How It Got Its Score: The Avenger SXT scores lower than many other four-cylinder sedans because many safety features aren't available even as options.

The Avenger is Dodge's entry into the hotly contested midsize sedan segment. To its credit, it is one of the least expensive entries out there, with a base price that's less than $21,000. However, the Avenger also offers less car for the money. Stability and traction control aren't available on the four-cylinder SXT, and fuel economy scores are notably lower than many of the Avenger's competitors. Even the trunk is on the small side.

On the plus side, there are some cool options, such as a rear-seat DVD system and heated and cooled cupholders. However, these are only available on the R/T, a more expensive model, and the price of the Avenger starts to climb quickly. Start checking those options the Avenger is suddenly in the same price range as some very tough competitors.
