Ford
2010 Ford Expedition XLT Four-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A full-size, eight-passenger, four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families who need lots of passenger space, off-road capability, and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Available power folding third row.
What's Not: Fuel economy is pretty poor.
Family Friendly Options: Headrest-mounted DVD screens, Bluetooth, SYNC, navigation.
How It Got Its Score: The 2010 Ford Expedition is one of the last big SUVs available. With four-wheel drive it's capable off road, and its huge interior is great for hauling passenger or lots of cargo, just not at the same time. Fuel economy is also poor.
Fuel-conscious drivers are turning away from full-size sport utility vehicles like the 2010 Ford Expedition, but there's no denying that big SUVs like this still play an important role. With four-wheel drive, the big Expedition has go-anywhere capability for families who like to blaze their own trail on camping trips. When you add a towing package (a $375 option on XLT and Eddie Bauer models, standard on Limited and King Ranch), you can tow up to 9,000 lbs. A power-folding third row seat is an added convenience, and Ford's SYNC cell phone and music device integration is still an industry standard. The downside is price and fuel economy. The base price of an XLT is already more than $40,000 with four-wheel drive, and prices climb dramatically as you move up the model scale, especially with the downright decadent King Ranch. Fuel economy suffers too, thanks to the added weight of the four-wheel drive system. Note that for XLT models, the third row is actually an $875 option (we've included it here), so you can save a few dollars if you need a basic four-wheel drive with maximum cargo space and don't need as much passenger capacity.
