2010 Ford Expedition EL XLT Four-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A full-size, eight-passenger, four-wheel drive, extended-wheelbase sport utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families who need lots of passenger space, off-road capability and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Cavernous cargo room.
What's Not: Poor fuel economy, bulky.
Family Friendly Options: Headrest-mounted DVD screens, Bluetooth, SYNC, navigation.
How It Got Its Score: The 2010 Ford Expedition EL is a long-wheelbase version of the Expedition, offering up huge volumes of cargo space behind the third row of seats. It scores slightly higher than rear-drive models because of better NHTSA roll scores.
The long-wheelbase version of Ford's biggest SUV is called the Expedition EL...we suppose the "EL" stands for "extra long." It's fitting, too. Thanks to the stretch, the 2010 Ford Expedition EL offers up 42.6 cu.-ft. of cargo space behind its third row of seats, giving it excellent cargo and passenger hauling capabilities. Designed to compete against the Chevrolet Suburban -- itself a long version of the Chevy Tahoe -- suffers from the same drawbacks as that big beast as well: Poor fuel economy and added bulk. Regardless, the four-wheel drive package gives it go-anywhere capability, and that cargo room means you can take pretty much everything with you, too. Throw in the towing package -- it's standard on Limited and King Ranch models and a $395 option on XLT and Eddie Bauer models -- the Expedition EL with four-wheel drive can tow up to 8.700 pounds, plenty for a boat or camper trailer. Note that unlike the Chevy Suburban, a heavy-duty three-quarter ton model isn't available, meaning serious haulers will have to look elsewhere.
