2010 Ford Escape XLS Front-Wheel Drive

Family Friendliness: 8.1

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to XLT and Limited four-cylinder front-wheel drive models.

What it Is: A compact two-row five-passenger crossover.
Who it's For: Families on a budget who need cargo space and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Low base price, fuel efficient four-cylinder.
What's Not: Aging vehicle compared to many competitors.
How It Got Its Score: The Ford Escape has a low price and good fuel economy, but its slightly lower NHTSA rollover score and lack of standard brake assist hurt its score compared to other compact crossovers.

If it feels like the Ford Escape has been around forever, that's because it almost has been. First introduced in 2000 and reengineered a few years ago, Ford has kept up with the competition by refining the underlying package significantly. For 2009 the Edge got more power and better fuel efficiency for its four-cylinder engine, which kept the little crossover in the hunt. However, fuel economy is still less than some of its primary competitors (the Honda CR-V for example), and its high ground clearance means its more prone to rollover accidents according to the NHTSA. Still, the Escape has rugged looks even if you don't opt for all-wheel drive, a selling point for those who prefer the off-road intender vibe.
