2010 Ford Escape XLT Front-Wheel Drive V-6

Family Friendliness: 7.8

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to Limited front-wheel drive V-6 models.

What it Is: A compact two-row five-passenger crossover.
Who it's For: Families on a budget who need cargo space and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Low base price.
What's Not: Aging vehicle compared to many competitors.
How It Got Its Score: The Ford Escape has a low price and good fuel economy, but its slightly lower NHTSA rollover score and lack of standard brake assist hurt its score compared to other compact crossovers.

If it feels like the Ford Escape has been around forever, that's because it almost has been. First introduced in 2000 and reengineered a few years ago, Ford has kept up with the competition by refining the underlying package significantly. For 2009 the Edge got more power and better fuel efficiency for its V-6 engine, which keeps the little crossover in the hunt.  It's also one of the few compact crossovers to even offer a V-6 engine, something even the class-leading Honda CR-V can't boast. In fact, considering its fuel economy, good price and sizable cargo space, the V-6 Escape makes a good competitor for one of Ford's other crossovers, the Edge. The Escape only got three stars in the NHTSA's rollover test, but offers rugged looks compared to many of its compact crossover competitors.
