How It Got Its Score: Thanks to its size, cargo and passenger capacity, safety and fuel economy, the Honda Odyssey EX-L has the same Family Friendliness rating as the less expensive LX.

Usually more expensive models of a particular vehicle score lower than less expensive ones, since the Family Friendliness Index takes price into account. However, that doesn't happen to the Honda Odyssey EX-L for one simple reason: Fuel economy. The major difference between this and the LX and EX models is Variable Cylinder Management, a technology that shuts off up to three of the six cylinders in the engine under certain conditions. The upshot is a 2 mpg increase in combined fuel economy, a noticeable improvement at the pumps. While we wish that VCM were available on lower-priced models, you get quite a bit more in EX-L and Touring models than just better fuel economy, such as leather upholstery and an available navigation system. If you're minivan shopping and aren't looking at the Odyssye, you're doing yourself a serious disservice.
