2011 Hyundai Elantra
What it Is: A small, inexpensive midsize five-passenger sedan.
Who it's For: Families who need a small car, but don't want to give up features or style.
What's Hot: Lots of car for the price, standout exterior and interior design.
What's Not: Noisy on the road, not everyone will love the exterior.
Family Friendly Options: USB, Bluetooth, navigation, premium audio, heated rear seats
How It Got Its Score: The Family Friendliness rating is preliminary, but the Elantra's excellent standard safety systems, big trunk and midsize classification give it a high score.
The 2011 Hyundai Elantra is all new this year, and the Korean manufacturer has improved virtually every aspect of the small sedan. Most obvious is the new exterior styling, which would be head turning on a car costing twice as much. The interior is equally as pleasant to look at, and Hyundai's choice of premium materials inside makes it just as nice to be in, too. Power comes from a 148-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder connected to a six-speed automatic. The combination produces 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, with a 33 mpg combined rating. That's on every single Elantra, not a special fuel sipper model, and it's one of the best cars in its class. There's decent interior room as well, and the trunk is plenty big enough for a stroller and some groceries or other items. Pricing is very competitive, with an automatic-equipped GLS starting at $17,800, including the $720 destination charge. A Limited model adds leather upholstery, a sunroof, and heated front and rear seats. It costs $20,800. If you're on a very tight budget and don't mind shifting your own gears, a stripped down manual transmission model -- without air conditioning or cruise control -- is available for $15,550.
