2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring GLS

Family Friendliness: 7.8

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to SE models.

What it Is: A compact five-passenger wagon.
Who it's For: Families on a budget who need maximum cargo capacity and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: One of the only compact wagons on the market, at a bargain price.
What's Not: Somewhat frumpy styling.
How It Got Its Score: The Elantra Touring's excellent cargo space helps considerably, but its fuel economy is only so-so among compacts, and it gets three four-star ratings in NHTSA crash tests.

Compact wagons like the Hyundai Elantra Touring used to be plentiful, but they're increasingly rare these days as crossovers and other vehicles become more popular. Still, even inexpensive crossovers cost quite a bit these days, which makes the Elantra Touring an attractive prospect if money is tight. While the Elantra only scored four stars in NHTSA rollover, driver and passenger impact tests -- results that drag down its Family Friendliness score -- it's still plenty safe. It also boasts more conventional styling than many of its competitors, such as the Scion xB, although it may be too conservative for some tastes.
