2010 Jeep Liberty Sport Four-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A five-passenger, four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families who need no more than two LATCH positions, decent cargo space and off-road capability.
What's Hot: Reversible cargo floor, full-length canvas roof.
What's Not: Poor fuel economy for such a small vehicle.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, Bluetooth cell phone integration.
How It Got Its Score: The four-wheel drive Liberty costs more than the rear-drive model, dragging its Family Friendliness score downward despite good crash test scores. Some of the blame lies with poor fuel economy.
This model of the Jeep Liberty is a "real" Jeep, in that it has an off-road ready four-wheel drive system. It's also available with undercarriage skid plates to prevent boulders from tearing apart things like your gas tank. If that sounds appealing to you, then the Liberty may be what you're looking for. However, keep in mind that although the Liberty has its strengths, its primary weakness is fuel economy. Although the 3.7-liter V-6 only puts out a minor-league 210 horsepower, it manages to drink gasoline like a much bigger engine, scoring only 17 mpg on the EPA's combined cycle. For comparison's sake, the Toyota FJ Cruiser costs about the same, but gets 18 mpg and offers 49 more horsepower. However, Liberty is still one of the least expensive four-wheel drive SUVs out there, and it offers ruggedly familiar Jeep styling. There's an available canvas roof that opens up to four-times larger than a standard sunroof, letting in all the sunshine you can handle. It's also available in a rugged Renegade model that's optimized for off-road duty.
