2010 Jeep Patriot Sport X 2.4-Liter With Front-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A small, five-passenger, front-wheel drive crossover utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families on a tight budget who dig the Jeep look.
What's Hot: Neat looking Jeep styling, one of the lowest priced crossovers on the market, more powerful engine than base model.
What's Not: Cheap interior, too many features are optional.
Family Friendly Options: Seat-mounted airbags, upgraded audio system.
How It Got Its Score: The Jeep Patriot Sport X leaves a lot of things on the table that should be standard, such as air conditioning. Its low price bumps up its score, and its interior volume pushes it into the midsize class of crossovers, but it's still a small crossover.
Front wheel drive Jeeps may not satisfy brand purists, who insist that every Jeep be a capable off-road vehicle. However, numbers don't lie, and more people are buying on-road crossovers than off-road utility vehicles these days. The Patriot is Jeep's answer to vehicles like the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, against which it competes despite being exactly big enough to fall into the midsize crossover class. This model comes with a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out more horsepower, however, you must get the five-speed manual transmission in both the lowball Sport X and mid-level Latitude if you want the bigger engine and front wheel drive. An automatic is available, but only on more expensive Limited models. On Sport X models just about everything is optional, even air conditioning, which we've included in our pricing here. The Latitude offers standard air conditioning, along with more plentiful options list that include a sunroof and upgraded audio system. All Patriots offer decent cargo space and distinctive Jeep styling, but the model lineup is confusing. You can save $895 and skip the air conditioning in the Sport X, but after driving a fully loaded Patriot Limited for a week, you might want to skip the Patriot altogether.
