2010 Jeep Patriot Sport X All-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A small, five-passenger, all-wheel drive crossover utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families on a tight budget who dig the Jeep look.
What's Hot: Neat looking Jeep styling, one of the lowest priced crossovers on the market.
What's Not: Cheap interior, too many features are optional.
Family Friendly Options: Seat-mounted airbags, upgraded audio system, navigation, Bluetooth, USB, iPod
How It Got Its Score: All-wheel drive Jeep Patriots come with a bigger engine and a more straightforward lineup. However, nearly everything is on the options list, and you have to move up to the more expensive Limited model even to get Bluetooth.
This looks like a Jeep, but many purists say that it's not because of its car-based roots. We don't really care about that so much, but if you're buying this four-wheel drive Jeep thinking you can go and bust trails, think again. This model comes with an all-wheel drive system designed for light-duty and wet roads, not for exploring the biggest rocks you can find. With a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine the 2010 Jeep Patriot with all-wheel drive gets decent if not stellar fuel economy,, and its size puts it up against competitors like the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, despite the fact that its interior volume very slightly nudges it into the midsize crossover category. Note that on the base Sport X virtually everything is optional, even air conditioning, which we've included in our pricing; you can save $895 if you skip it. The continuously variable automatic is also an option that costs $1,100 ($1,285 on Latitude models). However, if you're considering a Patriot you should probably just bump up to the Limited model anyhow so you can get navigation, Bluetooth, iPod integration and other options that aren't available in the Sport X or Latitude. Regardless, you'll have to put up with a lot of shortcomings, and after driving a fully loaded Patriot Limited for a week, we think you should skip the Patriot altogether.
