2010 Jeep Patriot Sport X All-Wheel Drive Freedom Drive II
What it Is: A small, five-passenger, all-wheel drive crossover utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families on a tight budget who dig the Jeep look and occasionally need a low range.
What's Hot: Neat looking Jeep styling, low range most competitors lack.
What's Not: Cheap interior, too many features are optional.
Family Friendly Options: Seat-mounted airbags, upgraded audio system, navigation, Bluetooth, USB, iPod
How It Got Its Score: The Freedom Drive II package adds a low-range to the Jeep Patriot, giving it off-road ability its competitors lack. Still, there are way too many options unavailable on lower models, and fuel economy suffers with the bigger engine.
If you really want a crossover and really want a low-range gearset, then this is pretty much the only choice going. The Jeep Patriot with the Freedom Drive II package offers up all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission, but with the pull of a lever it slips into a "low range" mode, giving it rock-crawling capability that its competition lacks. However, this adds a lot of money, and even the base Sport X model with the off-road package comes in at nearly $20,000, and that doesn't even include air conditioning! Air is standard on Latitude and Limited models, but you have to spring for the more expensive Limited if you want a navigation system, iPod integration, or even Bluetooth. At that point you're already spending well over $27,000, and if you must have off-road ability then there are better options out there. After driving a fully loaded Patriot Limited with all-wheel drive and the off-road package, we decided its shortcomings far outweighed its advantages, and we recommend skipping it altogether.
