How It Got Its Score: All two-door cars come to the Family Friendliness fight with one hand tied behind their backs. The Kia Forte Koup looks great and has lots of safety features, but buyers with kids should look at the sedan.
The 2010 Kia Forte Koup (it's pronounced "coupe") is a sharp looking compact two-door. Its standard five-speed manual can be swapped out for a four-speed automatic for an extra $1,000; doing so also lets you order a leather interior and a sunroof. The Forte Koup offers up plenty of standard safety equipment, such as stability control, brake assist and very good crash test scores. However, its two doors give it a handicap. Cars with two doors make it hard to reach the rear seats, which means it's difficult to strap in a kid, affix a child seat, or any of the numerous day-to-day rituals of parenthood and car ownership. On the other hand, the Forte Koup offers up a decently sized trunk and gets a combined EPA score of 30 mpg, better than many cars' highway score. Our advice: If you like the looks of the Forte, check out Kia's equally snazzy-looking sedan version.
