Land Rover
2010 Land Rover LR4
What it Is: A five or seven-passenger four-wheel drive luxury sport utility vehicle.
Who it's For: Families who need no more than two LATCH points, serious off-road ability and have money to spend.
What's Hot: Surround Camera System gives bird's eye view for easier parking.
What's Not: Expensive, poor fuel economy.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, USB, Bluetooth, back-up camera, rear seat DVD system.
How It Got Its Score: Like many luxury brands, the Land Rover LR4 would score higher with a lower price. Since it's a niche vehicle, it hasn't been crash tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, leaving us less criteria on which to base our index.
The 2010 Land Rover LR4 replaces the LR3 in Land Rover's lineup, thoroughly massaging the older vehicle's attributes and fixing many of its shortcomings. In reality, the hardest off-road duty most Land Rovers in the U.S. ever see is a gated community's gravel driveway, as the $48,100 price of this SUV is just the jumping off point. For example, if you want to add a third row for extra passengers -- and reduce the cargo area from 42.1 cu.-ft. to 9.9 cu.-ft. -- you'll pay an extra $1,150. The HSE package bundles navigation, heated seats, Bluetooth and other luxury items for an additional $3,650. The all-new V-8 engine offers great power, but fuel economy wasn't a priority and it drinks premium fuel, adding to the expense. You get the idea. However, even if you never use it, the LR4's excellent off road capability is something to behold, especially since it's enhanced with Land Rover's Terrain Response System. By turning a knob on the center console, you select what kind of surface you're driving on, and the intelligent off-road system then optimizes itself for grass/gravel/snow, sand, mud and ruts, rocks, or general driving around. We also like the Surround Camera System, which uses five cameras mounted around the vehicle to give a bird's-eye view of the LR4, making it a snap to park in tight areas -- or maneuver around boulders.
