2012 Mazda 5 Sport

Family Friendliness: 8.1

Recommended: Yes

Specifications also apply to Touring and Grand Touring models.

What it Is: A compact six-passenger minivan.
Who it's For: Families who want the sliding doors of a minivan in smaller package.
What's Hot: Flexible seating, low price.
What's Not: Fuel economy only so-so, cargo space isn't great.
Family Friendly Features:
Bluetooth, auxiliary input.
How It Got Its Score: This small vehicle puts the "mini" back in "minivan." Its compact dimensions hurt cargo carrying ability, and fuel economy is somewhat could be better, but its flexibility and low price make it a high-scorer.

Redesigned with a new look for 2912, the new Mazda5 still boasts the same features that made it nifty in the first place. In a world of low-priced crossovers, the Mazda5 is a true minivan, with sliding doors and three rows of seats. You can seat up to six, and although the rear seat is kids-only, the second row is surprisingly accommodating to taller adults. Cargo space behind the third row is barely big enough for a bag of groceries, but the third-row split-folds, allowing more room if you don't have a full passenger load. The Mazda5 is a little short on features compared to other vans though. There are no power-sliding doors, and a navigation or DVD system are only available as dealer accessories. Still, for the price it's tough to beat, and it's the only game in town until the Ford C-Max goes on sale.

Note: Family Friendliness score is preliminary pending crash test results.
