Mercury
2010 Mercury Mountaineer V-6 All-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A mid-sized, four-wheel drive sport utility with an available third row seat.
Who it's For: Families who need no more than two LATCH points and plenty of cargo room behind the second row.
What's Hot: Available power folding third row seat in Premiere model.
What's Not: Poor fuel economy.
Family Friendly Options: Bluetooth, SYNC, navigation, back-up camera.
How It Got Its Score: The Mercury Mountaineer's fuel economy lags many competitors thanks to its older, inefficient V-6 engine. However, it boasts strong crash test scores, which helps keep the score competitive.
As a virtual clone of the Ford Explorer, the Mercury Mountaineer boasts the same strengths, and suffers the same shortcomings. Of the latter, the foremost is fuel economy. The V-6 engine is not only down on power compared to competitors like the 2010 Toyota 4Runner and Kia Borrego, it lags them in fuel economy as well. On the other hand, unlike many of the crossovers against which the Mountaineer competes, the Mercury is a truck-based SUV, which means its four-wheel drive system gives it real off-road capability. You can go there in luxury too, thanks to the available rear-seat DVD player, SYNC music and phone integration, and numerous other premium touches. If you opt for the third row, keep in mind that it's part of a $3,995 option package on the base Mountaineer, but standard on the Premiere. In addition, the Mountaineer may be short lived. The Ford Explorer will soon be redesigned as a crossover, and Ford hasn't said whether there will be a Mercury version, if the current Mountaineer will soldier on, or if the model will be dropped altogether.
