How It Got Its Score: The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS Sportback looks cool and offers a larger and more flexible cargo area than the sedan. However, it's more expensive, and fuel economy isn't all that great.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS Sportback is a hatchback version of the Lancer sedan, with a larger and more flexible cargo area. However, this hatchback's Family Friendliness score doesn't get the bump we'd expect, for a few reasons. First, it's on the expensive side, as the lowest priced model is the GTS, which is the more expensive model in the sedans. Second, with a combined score of only 23 mpg, fuel economy isn't very good for a compact. Although cargo space can be easily expanded to 46.6 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded, there's only 13.8 cu.-ft. behind the rear seats, not much more than the sedan's trunk. Finally, it costs nearly $21,000 when you include destination, and that's a big chunk of change. Still, it looks great, and comes equipped with automatic climate control and standard Bluetooth cell phone integration. You can also get navigation and a leather interior, but that of course drives up the price. Like the GTS sedan, you can lower the price $1,000 if you opt for a manual transmission, but fuel economy takes a hit.
