What it Is: A four-door, seven-passenger V-8 powered four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle.

What's Not: Fuel economy only so-so, high price.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation system, back up camera, Bluetooth, rear entertainment system.
How It Got Its Score:The 2010 Nissan Pathfinder V-8 offers great towing capacity for a midsize SUV, but not enough to offset poor fuel economy and so-so crash test scores.

Since the 2010 Nissan Pathfinder shares a lot of its mechanical underpinnings with the much larger Nissan Armada, it's no surprise that Nissan managed to squeeze the Armada's big 5.6-liter V-8 engine under the hood. The Pathfinder V-8 offers plenty of power and very good towing capacity for a midsize SUV, but at a cost: Fuel economy. Compared to competition like the Kia Borrego, the Pathfinder V-8 offers lower fuel economy, and even a little less power and slightly lower towing capacity, too. The fact that the Pathfinder requires premium fuel doesn't help, either. We also wish that crash test scores were a little better, as the Pathfinder only managed four-star ratings in the front from the NHTSA, and wound up with a "Marginal" rear impact rating from the IIHS. Still, there's a lot to be said for four-wheel drive capability, and if you like yours coupled with V-8 power, the 2010 Nissan Pathfinder LE V-8 is one of a handful of choices that meet that requirement.
