How It Got Its Score: Normally all-wheel drive hurts a vehicle's with lower fuel economy, but the Legacy's low base price and very good fuel economy make it one of the highest ranking sedans on Family Car Review.
The 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i honestly surprised us when we ran the numbers. After all, if you look at its all-wheel drive competition, the scores are generally lower. This is because all-wheel drive usually lowers a vehicle's fuel economy and drives up the price. However, Subaru uses all-wheel drive on all its cars, so the extra cost can be amortized over more vehicles. Plus, changes to the 2010 Subaru Legacy significantly improved fuel economy with the continuously variable automatic transmission, putting it in the same category as the class leaders. Top it off with a big trunk and some excellent safety scores -- five stars in all categories from the NHTSA -- and you have one of the most Family Friendly sedans on the market. Note that if you opt for the six-speed manual transmission you'll save $1,000, but fuel economy also drops significantly.
