2010 Toyota Corolla

Family Friendliness: 7.4

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to LE, S and XLE models

What it Is: A compact four-door sedan.
What's Hot: Longest running Toyota nameplate, epitome of compact car utility.
What's Not: A little expensive for budget transportation.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, Bluetooth.
How It Got Its Score: Compact cars often have lower scores because of limited cargo space, but the Corolla's base price of $17,000 (with an automatic transmission) hurts more than anything else.

For compact car shoppers, the Toyota Corolla is often at the top of the shopping list, and for good reason. It's Toyota's longest running nameplate, and is associated with frugal and economic transportation the world over. Models range from the base here, all the way up to an XLE that includes leather and other premium features. The biggest knock against the Corolla is its price. At $17,000 for a base model with an automatic, it's notably more expensive than many competitors. Base prices don't climb quite as rapidly as some other brands though, but Toyota leaves some things on the options list, even on more expensive models. For example, even on the $18,100 automatic-equipped Corolla S, power windows and door locks are optional. If you prefer to shift your own gears, you can opt for a 5-speed manual in base and S models and save $800 off the price. Still, the Corolla's bulletproof reputation is hard to beat, and it's still consistently one of the best selling cars in the U.S. from year to year.
