How It Got Its Score:The 2010 Toyota Matrix is actually part of the Corolla family. It offers much better cargo space than the Corolla, and its hatchback shape makes it more flexible, too.

The 2010 Toyota Matrix is actually a wagon (or hatchback) version of the Toyota Corolla. Mechanically, the two vehicles are nearly identical. However, the Matrix offers some unique advantages over the Corolla sedan. First, obviously, there's the utility factor. With 19.8 cu.-ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats, it has a significant advantage over the sedan's cargo space. Plus, you can fold down one or both of those rear seats for even more cargo space (up to 61.5 cu.-ft.). We also think that the Matrix just looks nifty, especially compared to the Corolla's conservative styling. However, the Matrix is a little pricey for a compact wagon, with a starting price higher than $18,000. Regardless, the 2010 Toyota Matrix deserves a look for families with small children and small budgets.
