2010 Toyota Matrix S

Family Friendliness: 7.8

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to XRS models.

What it Is: A sporty five-door compact wagon.
What's Hot: Lots of cargo space, nifty styling, more power than base model.
What's Not: Options add up quickly.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, Bluetooth, premium audio.
How It Got Its Score:The 2010 Toyota Matrix S offers more power and costs more than the base model, but still gets good fuel economy, so it still gets a pretty good Family Friendliness score.

The 2010 Toyota Matrix S is the mid-grade model in the Matrix lineup. Essentially a wagon version of the Toyota Corolla XRS, the Matrix S offers the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in a slicker looking package. It offers up the same utility as the base Matrix, with 19.8 cu.-ft. of cargo space, which expands up to 61.5 cu.-ft. of space when you fold down the rear seats. The Matrix S costs about $2,300 more than the base Matrix when both are equipped with automatic transmissions (you'll save $1,190 if you opt for the 5-speed manual), but that price bump doesn't offset its Family Friendliness much. On the other hand, fuel economy dips noticeably, and you only get 24 additional horsepower in return.
