2010 Toyota Highlander 4-Cylinder

Family Friendliness: 8.3

Recommended: Yes

Specifications apply to this model only.

What it Is: A five-passenger, five-door midsize crossover.
Who it's For: Families who need no more than two LATCH points and lots of cargo space.
What's Hot: One of the only midsize crossovers to feature a four-cylinder engine.
What's Not: Four cylinder can't get third row available in V-6 Highlanders.
How It Got Its Score: The Highlander four-cylinder gets good fuel economy numbers for a midsize crossover, but the fact that it can't seat more than five holds it back.

If you need lots of cargo space for you and four other people and want to maximize fuel economy, then the four-cylinder Toyota Highlander may be worth a look. As one of the only midsize crossovers with a four-cylinder engine, it boasts a whopping 42.3 cu.-ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats, and gets a combined 22 mpg doing it, too. The downside is that the four-cylinder is only available on the base model, meaning that many of the Highlander's upscale goodies aren't available. In addition, you can only get two rows of seats in the four-cylinder Highlander, as opposed to three rows in the V-6 models. Still, if no-frills cargo-hauling is vital, it's worth a look.
