2010 Toyota Highlander V-6 Front-Wheel Drive

Family Friendliness: 8.2

Recommended: Yes

Specifications also apply to Sport and Limited V-6 front-wheel drive models.

What it Is: A seven-passenger five-door midsize crossover.
Who it's For: Families who occasionally need a third row and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Plentiful options and trim levels.
What's Not: Tiny cargo area behind third row.
How It Got Its Score: The Highlander V-6 scores lower than the four-cylinder model despite its extra seats thanks to its tiny cargo area, lower fuel economy and higher price.

The Toyota Highlander is a highly successful midsize crossover, but for us it presents something of a quandary. On one hand, the Highlander is relatively affordable for a V-6 powered midsize crossover. It seats seven and has good levels of safety equipment. However, you have to make a compromise between carrying seven passengers or lots of cargo, since there's only 10.3 cu.-ft. of cargo space behind the third row of seats. That's hardly enough for a single stroller, much less a week's worth of groceries. However, if the third row is only for occasional use, the Highlander makes more sense. Still, shoppers should check out some competitors.
