2010 Toyota Highlander V-6 All-Wheel Drive
What it Is: A seven-passenger five-door midsize crossover.
Who it's For: Families who occasionally need a third row and no more than two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Plentiful options and trim levels.
What's Not: Tiny cargo area behind third row.
How It Got Its Score: The Highlander V-6 scores lower than the four-cylinder model despite its extra seats thanks to its tiny cargo area, lower fuel economy and higher price.
The Toyota Highlander is a highly successful midsize crossover, but for us it presents something of a quandary. On one hand, the Highlander is relatively affordable for a V-6 powered midsize crossover. It seats seven and has good levels of safety equipment. However, if you need to carry a lot of cargo and seven passengers you're out of luck thanks to the small (10.3 cu.-ft.) of cargo space behind the third row. That's hardly enough for a single stroller, much less a week's worth of groceries. However, if the third row is only for occasional use, the Highlander makes more sense, since when folded you can seat five with cavernous cargo space. Still, shoppers should check out some competitors, and unless you live in a particularly storm-prone area, you can probably skip the all-wheel drive and save a few dollars at the dealership and the gas pumps.
