2010 Toyota RAV4 4-Cylinder Front-Wheel Drive

Family Friendliness: 8.5

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to Sport and Limited 4-cylinder front-wheel drive models

What it Is: A two-row five passenger midsize crossover with an optional third row.
Who it's For: Families who don't need only two LATCH points, and maybe an occasional third row seat.
What's Hot: Competes against other compact crossovers with only two rows of seats.
What's Not: More expensive than competitors, larger, too.
How It Got Its Score: The RAV4 offers good cargo space behind the second row of seats and good fuel economy with the four-cylinder.

Toyota probably doesn't want you to know this, but in many ways the RAV4 is better than the bigger and more expensive Highlander. How could this be so? Well, the RAV4 gets better fuel economy, for starters. It costs considerably less money, too. And if you opt for the RAV4's third row of seats, you actually get more cargo room behind the third row than you do behind the third row of the Highlander (although in fairness, 12.3 cu.-ft. is still pretty small). The RAV4 actually competes against other, mostly smaller crossovers like the Honda CR-V, and does well. Throw in its extra size and capacity with all the other RAV4's attributes -- low price, fuel efficient four-cylinder engine and a good level of safety equipment -- and it's easy to see why this small crossover remains popular.
