2010 Toyota RAV4 4-Cylinder All-Wheel Drive

Family Friendliness: 8.4

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to Sport and Limited 4-cylinder all-wheel drive models

What it Is: A two-row five passenger midsize crossover with an optional third row.
Who it's For: Families who don't need only two LATCH points, and maybe an occasional third row seat.
What's Hot: Competes against other compact crossovers with only two rows of seats.
What's Not: More expensive than competitors, larger, too.
How It Got Its Score: The RAV4 offers good cargo space behind the second row of seats and good fuel economy with the four-cylinder. All-wheel drive adds expense and lowers fuel economy though.

The Toyota RAV4 was one of the first crossovers on the market, and remains popular to this day. Now in its third generation, the RAV4 is one of the few inexpensive crossovers to offer an optional third row of seats. This adds to the utility as far as passenger capacity is concerned, but if you need to carry those passengers and their stuff, the cargo capacity is diminished to only 12.3 cu.-ft. However, we should note that a RAV4 so equipped actually offers more cargo space than the larger and more expensive Highlander, and that its Family Friendliness rating would be the same (the extra seats are mostly canceled out by the smaller cargo capacity). Throw all this in with the RAV4's other attributes of a low price, fuel efficient four-cylinder engine and a good level of safety equipment, and it's easy to see why this small crossover remains popular.
