How It Got Its Score: The 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI offers something no other car in its class can: A super fuel-efficient diesel engine. Unfortunately, it's also expensive, which offsets its fuel economy.
If you want to drive green, but don't want a Toyota Prius, then check out a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI. The "TDI" means it's a diesel, and a great one, with highway fuel economy that's 42 mpg. Don't worry; this isn't the old diesel technology you may remember from the 70s and early 80s. Today's diesels are clean burning, make virtually no additional noise, and it's likely the only diesel exhaust you'll smell will be from passing semis. All of it comes wrapped in the Jetta Sportwagen's European styling, which we think is quite nice. Unfortunately, it's also expensive, with automatic versions costing more than $26,000, and manual models still well over $25,000. Compared to other compact wagon's it's expensive, but if you're cross shopping it against a Toyota Prius or other small hybrid, it's a bit more reasonable.
