How It Got Its Score: With copious cargo capacity and a great safety record, the Volvo V70 would score higher if it had a lower price or better fuel economy.

Volvo station wagons are renowned for their utility, safety, family friendliness and inherent goodness. The V70 is no exception, boasting numerous standard and optional features that in many ways make it the ultimate family car. For example, the standard pop-up booster seats offer two positions for differently sized children. Optional blind spot detection keeps an eye out for you when changing lanes. A collision warning system combines with active cruise control to help you keep your distance while on the highway, and help you avoid a collision, too. The list goes on and on, but couple it all with the V70's cavernous cargo area and you have a tough act to follow. However, the V70 is held back in a couple of ways. Its six-cylinder engine is moderately powerful, but fuel economy is far below other six-cylinder cars. The base price is also high, and most of the family friendly things you'll want are pricey options, making the V70's already steep base price climb quickly. Still, if you have the means it's worth a look.
