2010 Volvo XC60 3.2 All-Wheel Drive

Family Friendliness: 7.9

Recommended: Yes

Specifications apply to this model only.

What it Is: A midsize two-row five passenger crossover.
Who it's For: Families who want a premium brand for their two LATCH points.
What's Hot: Numerous safety equipment, including a self-braking system.
What's Not: Options add up quickly on an already-expensive vehicle.
How It Got Its Score: The advantages of the two-wheel drive Volvo XC60's plentiful safety equipment and spacious cargo area are mitigated by the all-wheel drive model's higher price and lower fuel economy.

Volvo has built is reputation on safety, and it intends to keep that edge thanks to technologies such as the standard City Safety system, which will actually bring the vehicle to a complete stop in low-speed conditions if the system detects an imminent rear-end collision. Volvo is also a premium brand, and while the price brings down its score somewhat, it gets you a solidly built car with many premium features. However, a lot of what's offered on this Volvo -- with the exception of the exclusive City Safety system -- can be found on many cars with a lower base price these days. Still, with a premium nameplate, beautiful styling inside and out and plenty of room for five and their cargo, the XC60 is a strong competitor against other luxury crossovers. Unless you really need it because of frequently poor weather, we'd skip the all-wheel drive and save a few dollars at the pumps, and on the sticker.
