2011 BMW 335i Convertible

Family Friendliness: 5.6

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications apply to this model only.

What it Is: A compact four passenger luxury convertible.
Who it's For: Parents who want a second car and only occasionally need a rear seat.
What's Hot: Hard top convertible roof offers few compromises.
What's Not: One of those compromises: A tiny trunk.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, premium audio, active cruise control.
How It Got Its Score:The 2011 BMW 335i convertible is an indulgence for parents, since its tiny trunk and two-passenger rear seat preclude using it as a family hauler. But as a second car for sun worshipers, it's hard to beat.

A convertible shouldn't be the first choice for family car shoppers. Maybe not even a second or third choice. After all, they usually offer little in the way of trunk space, often have tiny rear seats, are almost always only two doors, and do we even need to mention the issue of a potential rollover? For example, we wouldn't feel comfortable putting a LATCH-equipped infant seat in the back of any convertible. On the other hand, happy parents are important to a happy family, and who could drive a 2011 BMW 335i Convertible without smiling? Let's just assume that it's a second car for a family that already has a family-friendly crossover or minivan. In a pinch the kids could sit in the back seat on the way home from school, although you'd better not stop for groceries, as the 9 cu.-ft. trunk will fill quickly. Fuel economy isn't very good, and this is a very expensive car, with a price that's nearly $55,000 before you start adding options. Still, if you're already looking at luxury convertibles, fuel economy and price probably aren't your primary concerns.
