Crossovers

2010 Chevrolet Traverse LS All-Wheel Drive

Family Friendliness: 8.7

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to LT, 2LT and LTZ models.

What it Is: A large crossover utility vehicle with room for seven.
Who it's For: Families who need at least three LATCH positions and plenty of cargo space.
What's Hot: More room than the bigger Chevy Tahoe, at a lower price.
What's Not: Plain-Jane styling.
How It Got Its Score: The Traverse offers a great combination of price, fuel economy, interior space and passenger capacity. Throw in great safety scores and you have one high-scoring crossover.

The Chevrolet Traverse shares the same underpinnings as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, but in a less expensive overall vehicle. While maybe not as luxurious as the Buick, or even the GMC, the Traverse offers up plenty of passenger and cargo space, more than even the bigger Chevy Tahoe. Considering its size and utility, its base price of roughly $30,000 makes it a good bargain, too. Premium features include a navigation system, backup sensors and camera and other luxury add-ons in higher trim levels, especially the LTZ. Of course, you pay more for those features. While all models share the same V-6 engine, we'd skip the all-wheel drive system unless you live in an area prone to foul weather, since it adds expense and hurts fuel economy.

In addition to the generous interior space and very good cargo space, we particularly like the "smart slide" second row seats. When folded forward, the seat cushion flips up, compacting the whole seat and creating a bigger space to access the roomy third row.
