2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Family Friendliness: 7.7

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications apply to this model only.

What it Is: A four-door, five-passenger hybrid midsize sedan.
Who it's For: Families who need no more than two LATCH points and value fuel economy over cargo space.
What's Hot: Excellent fuel economy for a midsize four-door sedan.
What's Not: Hybrid powertrain eats up a large portion of cargo space.
How It Got Its Score: The Camry Hybrid gets a big boost in fuel economy, but like the midsize hybrid sedans from Ford and Nissan, is knocked down by its higher price and limited cargo space.

Hybrids are a well-established automotive niche these days, and nobody has a firmer grasp of it than Toyota. The Camry hybrid looks more or less like a standard Camry from the outside, but under the hood is a sophisticated powertrain that gets up to 34 mpg on the EPA's combined scale. These days that's not the best-in-class -- the Ford Fusion hybrid wears that crown -- but it's still very good. However, the battery pack for the hybrid system is placed behind the rear seats, reducing the trunk from a generous 15 cu.-ft. to 10 cu.-ft. If you still use a stroller, or simply stock up on weekends at the grocery store, you'll have a tough time fitting everything in there. Still, the Camry hybrid benefits from the rest of the Camry lineup's qualities, and can be a good choice if cargo space isn't a priority.
