Minivans
2011 Honda Odyssey EX
What it Is: An eight-passenger full-size minivan.
Who it's For: Families who need a minivan that's optimized for carrying several LATCH-equipped booster seats.
What's Hot: Plentiful standard equipment list even on lowest-priced model, including Wide Mode second row seats.
What's Not: Can't get DVD or navigation without leather interior.
Family Friendly Options: Automatic front and rear climate control, USB, Bluetooth, navigation, DVD system
How It Got Its Score: The EX and EX-L are the best-selling Odysseys, covering a wide price and feature range. You can get almost everything available for the Touring and Touring Elite, but with a five-speed automatic.
The mid-level 2011 Honda Odyssey EX and EX-L offer up a comprehensive list of standard and optional equipment, covering all the basics plus a noteworthy amount of more luxurious items as well. With the EX you get standard power sliding doors, three-zone automatic climate control, sunshades on the second row windows, and a middle position in the second row, bringing the total passenger count to eight. Step up to the EX-L and you get leather upholstery (that's what the "L" stands for), along with a better audio system with a USB input, optional navigation or DVD systems (but not at the same time), a moonroof and power rear hatch, and a few other goodies.
Like the Touring and Touring Elite, the EX and EX-L offer up Honda's new Wide Mode second row, which allows owners to slide the outboard second-row seats a little closer to the sliding doors. Once you do that, you're able to fit three LATCH-equipped booster seats side by side. It's a real boon to people with large families, those who have multiples, or people whose many children are still in boosters. Fuel economy is a little worse than the Touring and Touring Elite since the EX and EX-L only have a five-speed automatic transmission, but since the entry price is lower, the Odyssey EX gets the highest Family Friendliness score of any vehicle on Family Car Review.
