2010 Mazda 5 Sport

Family Friendliness: 8.7

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications also apply to Touring and Grand Touring models.

What it Is: A compact six-passenger minivan.
Who it's For: Families who want the flexibility of a van in a compact-car size.
What's Hot: Six-passenger capability for less than $20,000.
What's Not: We'd expect bigger fuel economy
How It Got Its Score: The Mazda 5 wins points simply because it has sliding doors. Throw in decent fuel economy and safety and you have one high-scoring little van.

The Mazda 5 is unique in the U.S. marketplace, in that it is the only compact three-row minivan you can buy. All the traditional minivan goodies are there: Flexible cargo space, sliding doors, and room for more people than you'd expect. Yet it also comes with a four-cylinder engine, giving it better fuel economy than any other van you can buy. With the third row up cargo space is pretty limited, but if you simply keep them folded until needed it's not much of an issue, and cargo space is then enormous. While the Mazda 5 isn't for everybody, it seems to us that it should be for more people than it already is, especially given its low price.
