How It Got Its Score: The Buick Lucerne is a full-sized sedan, and one of a handful still available with six-passenger seating. Its big trunk helps its score, but so-so crash test scores hurt.

The Buick Lucerne is one of the few traditional full-size American cars left on the market, and one of the last sedans you can get with a bench seat in front for six-passenger capacity. However, it falls short simply because it has been on the market for a long time. Fuel economy is OK for a big car, and it has a large trunk. However, it lacks things like standard stability control (it's available as an option on more expensive CXL models), and its crash test scores -- a "Marginal" from the IIHS in rear collisions -- underscore the underlying problem: The competition has simply passed this car by. Despite all this, it manages to score higher than some other large cars that cost less money.
