2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Sedan XFE

Family Friendliness: 6.6

Recommended: Not Yet Driven

Specifications apply to Base, LS and 1LT models with manual transmission.

What it Is: A compact, four-door sedan.
Who it's For: Families on a tight budget who need no more than two LATCH positions.
What's Hot: Excellent fuel economy, low price.
What's Not: Stability control not available, XFE only comes with manual transmission.
Family Friendly Options: USB port, Bluetooth.
How It Got Its Score: The Chevy Cobalt XFE gets very good fuel economy, even for this fuel-conscious class. Unfortunately, stability control isn't available, and NHTSA crash test scores trail the competition.

The 2010 Chevy Cobalt is near the end of its life, having been introduced for the 2005 model year. This is one of the reasons many modern features aren't available on this compact sedan, such as stability control. While it will soon be replaced by the 2011 Chevy Cruze, the Cobalt still has some life left in it. It offers a roomy trunk, with 13.9 cu.-ft. of space larger than many cars that are much bigger overall. Order the manual transmission on Base, LS and 1LT models and you get Chevy's XFE fuel economy measures, which gives the Cobalt excellent fuel efficiency. Plus, it's dirt cheap; even though the base MSRP is only competitive, incentives are piled on the Cobalt to move it out the door in anticipation of its replacement. If you need cheap wheels fast it may be worth a look, but you might want to wait until the Cruze is available, as it's purported to be a vastly superior car overall.
