2010 Chevrolet Aveo5 LS

Family Friendliness: 5.3

Recommended: No

Specifications also apply to 1LT and 2LT models.

What it Is: A subcompact five-door hatchback.
Who it's For: Families who value low price over anything else.
What's Hot: Extremely low base price.
What's Not: Poor crash test scores.
Family Friendly Options: Keyless entry.
How It Got Its Score: The Chevy Aveo5 is Chevy's smallest offering, but it lacks many modern features, such as stability and traction control. It also gets a "Poor" rating in the IIHS rear impact crash test.

Subcompacts like the 2010 Chevy Aveo5 are often the car of last resort for family car shoppers. The low price is tempting, sure, but you have to remember what you're giving up to get it. Stick with the base Aveo5 LS and you can't even get air conditioning or power windows. They're available on more expensive models, but at that point, you're looking at much more vigorous competition from the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris, both of which score much higher than the Aveo5. The 15 cu.-ft. of cargo room is nice, and fuel economy is pretty good, but we think you give up too much to get it in the face of stiff competition. Then there's the matter of the "Poor" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's rear impact test. We're not sure we'd feel comfortable letting our own kids ride in the Aveo5, and thus we can't recommend it. If you're looking for a compact Chevy hatchback and don't have a lot of money, check out the Chevy HHR. It scores much better, and thanks to incentives it's not too expensive.
