2010 BMW 328i xDrive Sport Wagon
What it Is: A compact five passenger all-wheel drive luxury wagon.
What's Hot: Adds much-needed utility to 3 Series xDrive sedan.
What's Not: Not as Family Friendly as competition.
Family Friendly Options: Navigation, Bluetooth, active cruise control.
How It Got Its Score: The 2011 BMW 328i xDrive Sport Wagon's biggest advantage over the sedan version is its enhanced cargo area, which dwarfs the 3 Series sedan's trunk space. All-wheel drive also adds expense and reduces fuel economy.
There's no denying that the BMW 3 Series is a desirable line of cars. However, there's also no denying that, when you crunch the numbers, Family Friendliness isn't a hallmark of the lineup. An exception is the Sport Wagon, and even the all-wheel drive 328i xDrive Sport Wagon does pretty well compared to its sedan brothers. The reason is cargo space: With 25 cu.-ft. of room behind the rear seats, there's more than enough space for a stroller, groceries, toys for the park or whatever else you may need to haul around with your children. The fact that you get to spend the time behind the wheel of an excellent automobile is just icing on the cake. Still, we wish that this cake wasn't so expensive. At more than $40,000 with destination, this compact wagon comes at a premium, even compared to other luxury wagons like the Audi A4 Avant, and all-wheel drive hurts fuel economy. In addition, many things that are standard on the competition are optional here, such as Bluetooth. Still, if you like the 3 Series and absolutely must drive one in areas prone to bad weather, there's no question that this is the model to get.
